In July 2006 Hirsch was the 4th American at Ironman U.S. Pro Championships at Lake Placid, NY. To open the 2008 racing season, John has already won his first running race at Roxbury, CT.
John Hirsch is a pro triathlete coached by BI Sport Shop owner Jim Ortel. His race results of note include 4 short course triathlon wins in 2007 and a top 15 finish out of 40 pros and 2000 amateurs at Ironman Louisville Triathlon in August. In July 2006 Hirsch was the 4th American at Ironman U.S. Pro Championships at Lake Placid, NY. To open the 2008 racing season, John has already won his first running race at Roxbury, CT. It was a short, intense blast over 3.5 miles of hills on March 8.
A soccer player in high school and later at Northeastern and Connecticut College, John got into tri after cross training for soccer by running, surfing and cycling on Block Island where his parents are year round residents. In 1995 he entered his first race, the Block Island Triathlon. By 1999 Hirsch had connected with Jim Ortel who coached him to his first Ironman finish. In 2002, John finished 5th in his age group at Ironman Wisconsin and qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Jim advised John to turn pro in 2005. John’s remarkable Ironman career continues to progress, now against the world’s best triathletes.
Perhaps equally impressive is the fact that John juggles the demands of a pro training schedule with a career as a lawyer in NYC. Cycling or running to work is part of John’s routine year round, as are lunch hour pool workouts. He also coaches 20 endurance athletes known as the “C.R.E.W” and has a loyal following at his blog:
