Laurel was recently named USAT Pro Rookie of the Year. She is the first cancer survivor to earn a USA Triathlon Elite License all while working as a photographer, photo editor and graphic designer.
In 2008 I fulfilled my dream of joining my twin sister as a professional triathlete. The dream began shortly after I finished my swimming career at George Washington University. However, my plans were derailed when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 23. Suddenly, my world involved doctors, hospitals and chemotherapy instead of working, working out, and spending time with my friends. Throughout my treatment and the recovery that followed I watched on the sidelines as Bec pursued her athletic goals. Her success inspired me to get well and get strong! I stopped watching and started racing in 2007, and I feel better than ever. After a successful year as an amateur, I became the first cancer survivor to earn a USAT pro license and made my pro debut in 2008. The season went well and I was awarded Rookie of the Year by USA Triathlon, four years after Bec received the same award! Bec and I race for the Ulman Cancer Fund's TEAM FIGHT to raise awareness for young adult cancer support. We race to win--but we also race to show all the fighters out there what can be done after cancer. Never give up the fight!
